Senior Spotlight - Shay Rutledge

Congratulations to LMCA senior Shay Rutledge on the early signing of his National Letter of Intent to attend Division II Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, New York, on a cross country scholarship. Shay joins an elite group of athletes to receive a college scholarships for sports.  Out of an estimated 257,691 high school cross country athletes, only a striking 1.4% of those athletes receive a Division II scholarship, and Shay is part of that elite group.

Shay began running cross country his sophomore year and in just two years, has cut almost 3 minutes off his time and achieved personal records of 16:19 in the 3-mile category, and 16:41 in the 5,000 meters.  To put this into perspective, in the 3-mile race category, he ran a 6:14 minute mile sophomore year, and his senior year a 5:26 minute mile.  In the 5,000-meter (3.11 miles) race category, he ran a 5:59 minute mile sophomore year, and his senior year, a 5:28 minute mile.  Shay’s dedication, hard work, perseverance, and performance have earned him cross country accolades of 1st Team All-League and 1st Team All-State.  Last year, the cross-country team was state runner up, but this year, the team finished first at division finals and 3rd at regionals, and Shay ended his senior year finishing 1st at regionals and 3rd at the Nevada State Championships.

Shay is not only a decorated cross country athlete, but also a decorated basketball player, scholar, great role model, and an amazing young man.  Some of Shay’s other accolades include 1st Team All-League for basketball, 2nd Team All-League for basketball, LMCA Athlete of the Year, and a member of student ministries at LMCA, all while maintaining a 4.0+ GPA, and currently has a 4.39 GPA.  One would consider Shay to be a leader by example.  He is not one that likes to draw attention to himself, and would just rather be another face in the crowd, despite all of his accolades. We are so proud of Shay and his accomplishments, but more importantly his testimony and commitment to being a great mentor, and wish him much success in his future endeavors.
