NEW PILOT CHRISTIAN DEAF EDUCATION PROGRAM
There is a great need in Nevada for quality education for our hearing-impaired children. Research has shown today the average deaf and hard of hearing student has a mean reading level of fourth grade; fifty percent score higher and 50% score lower. Simply put, it appears that the conditions of early childhood and K-12 education encountered by most deaf children result in their being less prepared than hearing peers for classroom learning, and life challenges, a gap likely to increase with age.
(1) We have the chance to radically improve that. We can and will do this by having higher standards and goals for the deaf students coming to us for education. We will use sign language English and other hands on educational tools to help get concepts across to our deaf students. We will weave into all our teachings the love of Christ and the truth of the Gospel. This will give our students the knowledge that thru Christ they can do all things.
LMCA will be starting a three semester pilot program in Deaf Christian Education. The program will be for 2nd thru 4th graders. (1st and 5th graders will be considered if space is available). Subjects will be taught in English (verbal and written) and sign language (signed and pictorial) to help in a better comprehension of subject matter. Due to the commitment of a small class size, four to five students, space is extremely limited. The program will be designed as a multi-ability classroom giving all students the opportunity to excel and learn. The students will enjoy a smaller class size for a more focused learning experience. Students completed applications must in and finalized buy February 18th 2008.
